Depuy Hip ASR
If you were the recipient of a Depuy ASR you fall in to one of three categories: 1. You had the Depuy ASR and you have No symptoms at all at the moment. 2. You had the Depuy ASR and you are already having symptoms and will need revision Surgery. 3. You had the Depuy ASR and you already and revision surgery. Let’s review what the problems with the Depuy ASR is, it appears that the receiver cup is too small, this size insufficiency causes what is called edge loading, and there are thickness/thinness issues with the prosthetic surface which can cause lubricant strangulation, which causes inappropriate ware which further creates metallic debris such as chromium and cobalt to enter the blood stream causing other complications and further hastening the ware process which creates more metallic debris so on and so forth. The metallic particle can eventually lodge in to bodily organs, we also do not know the long term effects of metallic presence in the bloodstream although this issue is being studied in England.
How do I know if I have an DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System?
How do you know that you have a Depy ASR? Well there are several indicators; one you may be contacted by your physician, by Depuy or by Broadspare who is the company the DePuy has hired to manage their recall issues.
Usually the letter will tell you that you may need revision surgery, but no surprise they will not tell you about the metallic particles and soluble ions that are going to circulate in your blood stream. They will not tell you that when you have revision surgery they are destroying additional bone tissue, muscle tissue and the abductor muscles.
Broadspare will not tell you that once you have revision surgery, and there is more severe destruction in the surgical field, more bone loss, more muscle loss more weakness in the operative field, there will be more complication that may require a third and forth revision surgery and of course Broadspare is not offering to pay for the third and fourth surgeries.
The symptoms of a Failed or failing DePuy His ASR are the following:
1. A Clicking noise,
2. Pain in the Hip and Groin area
3. Swelling in hip,
4. Intensified pain or difficulty walking,
5. A feeling of loosening and instability in the hip implant.
Mechanism of the Prosthetic: The prosthetic device made of the acetabular cup and the femoral head and the femoral stem. The DePuy ASR is a MOM (metal on metal) design, metal on metal means large amounts of friction causing the creation of metallic debris in the form of Particle and ions. Particles causing more ware and interfering with the bony ingrowths which hold the cup in place.
